Seasonal depression

Now that the holidays are over , we are left with memories of how we had so much fun during Chrismas and how much we spent. While others consider January as a month of expenses, l consider it a month of recovery… back to reality. What l find interesting about Chrismas is that “Everyone loves it, everyone must be happy and not forgetting the famous Ask during the festive “Chrismas box?”

l always find it difficult to answer to that question as l dont know what that means …. probably it is because in my family people dont do chrismas presents and l always find it a bit awkward for someone to ask me that. We do not do boxes but the pressure that comes with dressing differently and eating a unique dish is ironic. Noone want to eat what they eat everyday or wear what they wear everyday, the day has to end special in that way.

They say Chrismas is Jesus’ birthday and my assumptions is that people are going to honor the day either in church doing some holy stuff because Jesus is Holy right, but Nah my fellow people can meet in Jesus’ name and not do anything Jesus-like. The level of enjoyment is exciting and it is that time to do anything fun just to show that you are happy.

This season also comes with depression and we all can cope with it differently. Everytime l am not working, l either spend the day writing , sleeping and listening to Jazz but doing that during festive season is difficult because everyone is expecting me to show some level of exictement and spend some few bucks. But the obession that comes with being “merry” on Christmas is depressing to me. I dont want to lie l just want to spend the day indoors but that is impossible.

Seasonal depression can also be called Seasonal affective disorder , it is a mood disorder characterised by depression that occurs at the same time every year. It can be a feeling of fatigue, depression, hopelessness and social withdrawal. I always experience this during every festive season, not because l dont like Chrismas and the holidays but because l have an unique way of celebrating it which is not really “merry”

Seasonal depression is very common and sometimes we experience it unknowingly and it passes without even realizing it. Sometimes we develop more problems due to the seasonal depression and we might not see it . Sometimes it is just a phrase that passes. When we go through this, let us not forget to take things slow and find people to talk to.
